"It takes a village to transform a community"

Hope Community Center

Mission:

The mission of Hope Community Center (HCC) is to accelerate breaking the cycle of proverty through community education.

Local leaders donated the community center facility to show their committment to community  development. The Center is strategically located to reach the poor in the slums, where no other similar institutions are available.

The Community Center acts as the hub, from where community development is mobilized. Hope Kenya requires community leaders to donate a facility from where to mobilize community resources. We believe that every community has something to give towards their community development...

Access to good and affordable education for families that live in the slums is critical for effective community development. Through the Community Center, early childhood development programs as well as health, hygiene as well as nutrition education, is provided

Additionally, the Center provides a library, and acts as a neutral venue where local women groups meet to receive counseling, talk about education, share ideas on traditional social-economics topics including livestock, farming, business and micro-financing.

Hope Community Programs

The Early Childhood Program (ECP) is designed to provide affordable education to poor kids who would otherwise be excluded from the educational system.

Hope Community's early childhood program is currently serving 36+ kids too poor to attend other area schools. Hope Kenya understands and appreciates the distinct role of the governments and that of the families in providing services

The Kenya government offers eight years of free primary school education to children, provided they have graduated from an early childhood development program paid for by their parents. Unfortunately, most of the parents in the slum and especially those that have been impacted by HIV AIDS are uanble to afford early childhood education.

A donation of $30 per month will sponsor a child to attend Hope School. The child gets a meal, clean water, school uniform, tution and instructional material. For a single donation, Hope School is able to admit an additional child for free.

Regardless income, families contribute $5 per month in cash, barter or community services to support their child's education at the school

Early childhood education

To enhance the mission of elementary school education across  Kenya, Hope collaborates with local leaders in Kenya, government officials and American schools in advancing community education. Hope Kenya facilitates and leads the Kenya American Educational Institute (KAE), a partnership of educators in Kenya and in America.

Library

Hope Community Library is the only public library in Machakos town, serving a community of over 10,000 people. The next closest library is in Nairobi, about 50 miles away. It costs $10 round trip to travel from Machakos to Nairobi...

Special thanks to, The Friends of Olathe Public Library (Kansas), Friends of Lawrence Public Library (Kansas) and individuals who donated over 3,000 titles and continue to support the Hope Community Library.

Economics

Economic programs at the Center provide complementary funding for Hope school programs as well as enabling the Center to be self-sufficient and graduate from donor assistance. These economic programs also facilitate economic education,  business development and  community micro-financing.

The Hope micro-financing project is dedicated to training and enhancing free enterprise in rural communities in Kenya.

Micro-business

The first micro-financed project was piloted with poultry. Within six weeks, a local farmer was able raise chicken and sell them, generating over $100 in profit. The farmer was asked to re-pay the micro-loan, document small scale chicken farming and educate others on best practice. The model will be rolled out in a large scale once we find 'patient capital' aka 'funders'.

Water

The Life Church  project helped provide employment to 20+ families for 8 months, as men, women and children worked hard, digging a borehole and moving dirt, for 80 feet to get to clean underground water. As a result of this project, 5000+ people have access to affordable clean water

Public Health

As a result of a partnership between local health workers and American health care professional, local families, who are vulnerable to diseases are now being educated on basic health, hygiene and nutrition. Additional, intervention strategies are being deployed in partnership with local health clinics. We continue to seek health care partnerships to advance this initiative...
